Golden Moments

Well, let's start with the obvious:  it's a new year. January last year is when I decided I'd become a forreal blogger, and I have to admit I stuck with it longer than my track record suggested I would, but  not as long as I'd hoped to. Granted, I haven't completely given up on it -- I still come back every once in a while and post something.

I don't want to make myself any promises surrounding this blog because I know I'll only be disappointed in myself when I break them. So I will say that I'll try to come back to this space every now and again and update my readers (I mean, if I even still have any...) on my life.

With the start of a new year comes many changes. It's only January 12th and I've already made new friends, traveled a bit, and started a Master's program. I'm just gonna assume that things will only get crazier from here on out. I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and I've come to the conclusion that I need to take active steps to keep myself happy and grounded amidst the mania this year.

When I was younger, as you may or may not know, my dad died. It was a hard time for my mom and me -- I'm an only child. What we started doing was keeping a "happiness journal." The goal was to write three things every day (give or take) that made you happy or smile, or good things that happened to you that day. We did this for a little over a year. (Let me just tell you how entertaining it is to go back to that journal and read all about what makes an 8-year-old happy.) I want to start this habit again. It's always nice to reflect on good things that happen because it's so easy to get caught up in drama and let the little things get to you. I'll be real here; I'm not trying to keep myself out of the drama and I'm not promising to not get caught up in at least once in a while, because that's nearly impossible. I just want to have something to reflect on to remind me how great my life is, even when it's just the little things that bring a smile to my face.

I encourage everyone to join me on this if only because it will make us happier people. (And happy people just don't shoot their husbands.)

I bought a notebook from Target -- because where else? -- and that's where I'm going to keep my notes.  I was inspired to call them golden moments because the notebook is gold and white stripes. How perfect, right?
I obviously chose the one far left.  :)

This won't necessarily be an every day thing. I'm totally expecting to fall off the wagon a few times, but I do plan to carry the notebook with me everywhere so as soon as something awesome happens I can write it down. If you do something similar to this, or want to join me in my personal "challenge" I'd love to hear from you. Comment, email, whatever. If you have an idea you'd like to share, don't hesitate! This is a really personal thing for me, but I'm happy to be sharing it with all of you. I think we could all use a little inspiration now and again, especially when it comes to reminding ourselves how great life really is.
